Armero fue fundada frente al cañón del río Lagunilla, que nace en el Volcán Nevado del Ruiz, por este cañón ya habían bajado lahares o avalanchas producidas por las erupciones del volcán en 1845 y 1595. el poblado inicial de San Lorenzo fue fundado oficialmente en 1908 y en 1930 tomó el nombre de Armero, tuvo un rápido desarrollo social y económico gracias a la fertilidad de sus tierras y el emprendimiento de su gente.
